GFRP in tunnel construction

Soft-eye: reinforcement where a tunnel boring machine passes through a wall.

Reinforcement cage with a GFRP soft-eye zone being prepared on site

A soft-eye is a zone in a diaphragm wall designed for a tunnel boring machine to pass through. Steel reinforcement in this location is replaced with GFRP, which the machine's cutting head can cut as it advances through the wall.

This example from IKK MateenBar shows preparation of a reinforcement cage with this zone. Its dimensions, arrangement and sizing form part of the design of the specific structure.
